Censors come calling by Lisa Murray

The article, Censors come calling, explains that although it is well-known fact that internet has brought the free speech and the explosion of personal idea in some counties or even more, the information and communication on the internet are generally banned and controlled by censorship. Also, it depicts there is internet filtering not only in communistic countries such as China, Iran, Egypt and Vietnam but also democratic countries.

However, the most significant in this article talks about that it seems that the censorship and banning freedom of speech would not be stopped because for governments, it is attempt to control internet media field. For example, by the employed censors to track down and block unauthorized websites, most of Chinese people’s speeches have been restricted and controlled. Also, more than 60 online journalists and bloggers have been jailed.

For this, I think it is possible that it could interrupt internet users to express their own idea and speech as Murray states that when people realize they are being watched, their behaviors could be changed. So, if people are encouraged to have concerns about their internet use by some way such as goverments or themselves, it can bring increase of self-censorship and also, internet censorships may be reduced.

my understanding of 'Citizen Journalism'

In my personal view, so far, citizen journalism is quite remarkable features that internet media has brought. Moreover, it includes various forms such as independent news websites, podcasts and other personal broadcast sites.

Citizen journalism is quite close to democratic journalism that involves regular people although both journalists and journalism are not professional. In other words, it seems that citizen journalism does not require academic and professional techniques and writings. So, anyone can be a journalist and have their own opinion about any topic and issues without any restriction.

As citizen journalism is made and analyzed by averaage people, it might provide more sympathetic views to readers than public and media press.
